I remember the red mouth of the furnace, the wine we drank like water, and the buckets of water we dipped our heads into between shovelfuls of coal
Rowend, last of his kind, is the chosen one of a dead world; Casidra is a refugee from another. Together they hunt a common enemy, a shape-shifting dragon, in a chase from one universe to the next. Together they will fight. Together they will survive.
It's been five years since Rowend left his people on their doomsday. Shoveling coal on a transatlantic steamer, he finds Casidra hiding. She's escaped the hold where her kind are kept, waiting to be sold in America. Rowend convinces her not to sacrifice herself rescuing them, to abandon her fellow slaves, and to journey with him, because he knows what her people have only just learned: the Queen of Spheres comes at the end, and she eats worlds, and there is a dragon who is her agent.
They pursue the dragon. Rowend's lost his trail, but together they'll find a new one, leading from New Orleans to an immense, nameless tree farm, to a planet under siege and burdened with plague, to a city of clockmakers, oomancers, and enslaved rats. Their wounds, separate and shared, bond them to each other. Casidra teaches Rowend to hunt; he gives her hunting purpose. He doesn't tell her that she's given the same to his chase.
